Futurejinx!

So our break continues, but working on Spacejinx sure doesn’t! Currently, Kat has completed all the roughs (for now), and Wensleydale has begun with the rough lettering, and pages 1 and 2 are in penciling stages. W*O*W!

Because these are very much in progress right now, have some “10 years-in-the-future (or so)” timeskip art! Not that this would happen, because SPOILERS, but we were having fun with possible endgame scenarios, like Benedict getting a sleeve tattoo and white streaks (because older), and Florian just changing his hair BECAUSE HE CAN. ((and Edmund becomes a techmaster? who knows!))

Spacejinx’s humble beginnings…

We’ve been working on Spacejinx since 2010 (!!!), though the characters of Benedict and Florian have been around a bit longer (2007). They didn’t actually start off in space–and weren’t always human (or robot, in Florian’s case).

first sketches of Benedict and Florian by Kat

Benedict started off as a villain in a story Ocicatsy worked on for a 12-hour comic jam session–and he was a ~*vampire*~. ((Surprise!))
Florian, on the other hand, was your typical runaway human prince. We just made him up to serve as a snack for Benedict and as an excuse to draw slashy art.

They basically run into each other in the middle of ye olde fantasy setting and end up traveling together and having a series of misadventures (hence our website name).
Oh, and Edmund?

He definitely has gone through the biggest change, and a lot of that is a story for a different update ^^;;; But he also started off as a ~*vampire*~ and served as Benedict’s rival and the antagonist in this setting. He ran a successful perfume business, owned an entire city, and was also the boss of Wendy and Selene (also ~*vampires*~…there *might* be a theme going on here).

Somehow when we finally decided to sit down and make a webcomic though, we threw (most of) that out the window and set it in space, and downgraded Edmund from ‘villain’ status to ‘obnoxious roommate’. Also, no vampires. So yeah! A time-traveling post to the beginning of Benedict, Florian, & Friends.

Mission 6 Pre-Production

Hello! We are in the thick of it now with Mission 6 pre-production. I don’t want to spoil the fun of seeing the story unfold in the comic, but I think I can post a few things that we’re working on.

The majority of Mission 6 is thumbnailed on one page of my sketchbook. After this I switch to an entirely digital workflow, but for these little stick figures I’ve found that nothing beats a real pencil!

The little numbers in circles correspond to numbers in a doc with dialogue and notes for each panel, and the rectangles with numbers correspond to page layouts. After drawing at thumbnail size to sort out which story beats fit on each page, I redraw very roughly at full size in Photoshop. Right now it looks like the next chapter will be around 38 pages. The first round of layouts is done and now we’re editing!

At the same time I’m also working on designs for props, locations, and other new things for the chapter. I always love an excuse for new outfits, so I’ve been playing around clothing design. These aren’t final yet though!

Spacedrinx

We did some testing in the kitchen to come up with a Spacejinx-themed drink recipe! It’s pink, the sugar rim adds some sparkle, and starfruit* makes a cosmic garnish! Can be made with or without alcohol depending on one’s age and preference (always drink responsibly!).

Boozy

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 1/4 oz St. Germain
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Grenadine

Shake with ice and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with a slice of starfruit.

Virgin

  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • 1 oz Grenadine
  • 2 oz Club Soda

Stir lime juice and grenadine with ice, add Club Soda and stir once more (gently). Strain into  sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with a slice of starfruit.

*Please note that some people may have adverse reactions to starfruit

unnamed((we couldn’t find any starfruit, sadly! but once we do…!!!))
